Celebrating Organic September with Soil Association

At English Tea Shop we’ve always been committed to organic farming and love to celebrate all things organic. Read on to learn more about Organic September and the great work Soil Association does to help look after our planet.

Who are Soil Association?

Established in 1946, Soil Association is a registered charity working with businesses, organisations and individuals to transform the way we eat, farm and care for our natural world. Their activities include campaigning against intensive farming for local purchasing, and public education on nutrition, alongside certification of organic foods. At English Tea Shop, we’ve always been committed to organic farming and we’re proud to be Soil Association certified organic.

What is Organic September?

Soil Association launched their month-long campaign, Organic September, to raise awareness of the many benefits of organic farming and foods. With climate change worsening, along with the widespread decline in wildlife and the rise in diet-related health conditions, they recognise that  the need to change our food systems has never been greater. The campaign includes raising awareness on the following…

  • Supporting biodiversity and wildlife
  • Helping to combat climate change
  • The highest standards of animal welfare
  • Reduced exposure to pesticides

Our mission at English Tea Shop:

“We strive to create the finest organic teas while having a net positive impact on the planet and the lives of everyone involved from farm to cup.”

Organic farming is at the core of our business and we’re delighted to be helping to spread the word on Organic September.

Organic farming at English Tea Shop

Our unique circular approach to sustainability sits at the heart of everything we do. With training and support for our farmers, we encourage a switch to organic farming which will nurture the soil for many generations to come. We strive to build sustainable communities at every step, as well as ensuring all packaging is planet friendly.

In our commitment to organic farming, we worked together with our farmers on developing organic composting solutions for individual farms. After doing some research, we discovered that making compost ourselves is the most effective and affordable way to add organic matter to soil. We also help our farmers by contributing to Fairtrade and organic certification fees. Fairtrade guarantees fair and sustainable prices as well as decent working conditions for our farmers.

“When we created English Tea Shop, we knew exactly what we wanted to do… To set up a joyful organic tea revolution in Sri Lanka with our love for our people, the organic approach and our land, while bringing prosperity to our farmers, the entire value chain and our planet at large”
 - Suranga Herath, CEO

Three of our favourite organic brands

We’re all for supporting other businesses that have made the bid to commit to organic farming and responsible sourcing. Here are a few, though you can find more organic registered brands on the Soil Association website.

Georganics – Natural, organic and sustainable oral care products made in the UK. They have created products such as refillable toothpaste tablets and compostable toothbrushes.

Real Foods – Delivering organic groceries, fresh fruit & veg and household goods nationwide in the UK.

Nomads Clothing – Dedicated to creating beautiful clothing with ethical values. Inspired by the vibrant culture of India, find handloom textiles and intricate embroidery.

How you can help to grow the organic movement

There are many steps you can take to join the organic revolution. Whether you’re just learning to be more sustainable, or you’re already a green-fingered organic gardener, here are three small things you could be doing to make an impact:

  • Make the switch to an organic cuppa! Around 100 million cups of tea are enjoyed daily in the UK alone, imagine how much of an impact we could make by making just one simple switch. Shop our organic blends here.
  • Support your local organic farms to help sustain organic farming. There’s plenty around that are doing their bit to create a better future for our planet. Help them to grow by buying their produce over supermarket alternatives.
  • Learn! Get to know what organic really means and why it matters. From there you can figure out what may be the easiest switches for you to make to your own lifestyle.
